Description

​​​​​The Discovery Series set of classes will allow students to step outside of their comfort zone just enough to open a new level of discovery.  The first session will focus on negative painting, the next will be painting large and loosely, and the third class in the session will be working in neutral colors.

This is Discovery Series #2: "Let's Go Big & Get Loose!" Often artists paint a size of substrate that they get used to using: This is especially true when an artist is at the beginning of their painting journey. In this class, we will explore the methods to at double, triple or the size substrate and leave the comfort zone behind. We will use bigger tools, but also consider how size might affect the composition, the color theme, and, for some students, learning to paint off an easel versus painting flat on a table. We will also get into the habit of stepping back to get a good visual as we work.

  • Supplies required: Please read the Supply List for details. Students must bring their own supplies for painting in acrylic or oil. For the photo reference: You may use the same photo that you used in the previous class. 
  • Suitable for Adults / Ages 16+.
  • Class Dates (4 sessions): Tuesdays, 10am–12:30pm - Nov. 26th, Dec. 3rd, 10th, & 17th.

Sherry McNamara began oil painting at a young age in a private studio in Detroit. Her first experience in the studio raised a passion for oil painting that has continued throughout her life.

Sherry was selected for the juried 2019 Northwest Michigan Regional Juried Exhibition The Dennos Museum Center. She was also selected for the juried show The Art of the Sleeping Bear Dunes at the Dennos Museum in 2013 and the book, The Art of the Sleeping Bear Dunes: Transforming Nature into Art.

Awards:

  • 2015 Honorable Mention in the Baypointe show for Battling Worry
  • 2016 Honorable Mention in the Baypoint Show for A New Dawn
  • 2016 Second Place in Glen Arbor Art Center for Resilience

Sherry has been occupied with the natural world from the time she was young growing up on a ravine overlooking a river watching the wildlife and waterfowl on a daily basis. She has a fondness for painting water scenes, but also artistically explores barns, fields, clouds, trees, and people.  Sherry keenly observes how light affects all things, how it illuminates the sunny side of a barn, how it brightens thinning clouds, how it is broken into shadow patterns by tree branches on grass.  Nature is always, always intriguing.   

Sherry is a member of Oil Painters of America, American Women Artists, Plein Air Painters of Northwest Michigan, Magic Thursday Artists, and Studio One 6.

Cancellation & Class Policies

Cancellation Policy for Traverse City Classes (In-Person)

Student Withdrawal
Requests for cancellation by the student at least seven (7) days prior to the first day of class will be honored (minus a $20 processing fee).  NO REFUNDS will be given for a student cancellation made less than seven (7) days in advance of the first day of the class.

Class Cancellations (Weather)
In the event of inclement weather, CTAC-TC will announce the cancellation on its website and phone system (231-941-9488). We will do our best to provide a make-up opportunity for the missed class. Refunds will not be given if the student is unable to attend the rescheduled session of class. Please note that CTAC-TC does not follow Traverse City Area Public School closings.

Student Absence
We are unable to offer refunds or make-up sessions for classes missed due to student absence.

Minimum Enrollment
Crooked Tree Arts Center reserves the right to cancel any class that does not meet its minimum student enrollment prior to the first class session. If a class is cancelled by CTAC for lack of enrollment, CTAC will offer a full refund to the student in the manner in which tuition was paid. (Cash payments will be refunded by check.)
