This masterclass is designed for open and creative interpretation in both 2D and 3D, taking both painted and sculptural forms into new fantastic territory. Building upon what you already know, you will explore new skills and techniques that can transform a blank canvas into a three-dimensional living sculpture, old spare parts into an interactive story of wonder, a discarded chunk of wood into a mighty presence demanding investigation - whatever you have in mind, the options are endless!
"Painting as Object" presents an alternative perspective of painting, whether it is oils or acrylics. It addresses painting's objectness or objecthood, as contrasted to painting as a picture window of a two-dimensional illusion that transports one to other worlds. "Painting as Object" pushes in the other direction, away from illusion and toward itself as an object that shares our environmental space. Whether a painting is canvas stretched around wooden bars, panels made of wood, metal, or other substrates, in all actuality these are already objects.
The focus of this class is elaborating on the material qualities of a painting, whether they are acrylics, oils, found or fabricated objects, fabrics or wherever your imagination takes you.
Developed through decades of experiential practice by professional artist Rufus Snoddy, this masterclass is for Intermediate and Advanced art students who are confident in their painting skills and have some preliminary experience in assembly or collage.
