An open call exhibit at Crooked Tree Arts Center in Traverse City featuring art created primarily with recycled/upcycled and found object materials. Recycled art is a powerful form of expression that showcases the potential of discarded materials. TIMES 2, a title that reflects the second use of materials, will highlight how artists can breathe new life into discarded materials, turning them into extraordinary works of art.
Here is the Juror Statement:
Royce Deans Juror Statement for Times 2
An Exhibit of Artwork Made Primarily from Recycled, Up-Cycled and Found Object Materials
Creativity exists in all of us. It is a huge part of what makes us human. How creativity manifests itself showcases personal expression which is an important aspect of our human experience.
Artists might wear their creativity further out on their sleeves more than most, and in turn that personal expression becomes a major form of the way they communicate. This exhibition, "Times2" presents a grouping of very special works of art that communicate as many stories and intentions as there are artists in the show.
Times2 presents a theme of recycling, repurposing, and reusing objects that have been either discarded, or forgotten, or both. Here we see many examples that not only express what the artist wants to say, but contain much of the energy that still exists in the objects from their former life.
As you view this exhibition, you will enjoy recognizing objects, organic matter, and maybe even machine parts that have become the artists' raw materials in the process of making something new.
I encourage you to look beyond the "what it is made from" and take in what the artist is telling each of us. As you do so, you will undergo a shift in awareness. It may be small, or it could be huge, but I suspect that upon leaving these galleries, you will see new possibilities. You will likely look at the stuff in your basement and garage differently. You may also suddenly find yourself considering what the impact is on the world around us by your own choices. But more importantly, what if you were able to investigate a little more deeply your very own creativity?
