Geode ice dyeing is all the rage - but hard to do - so this class uses an innovative hot water process. Learn various techniques, geode tie, tie dye, incline dye and more! The $20 materials fee (payable to instructor) includes a luxurious bamboo scarf and bamboo socks.

Additionally, if there is time left, students may have the opportunity to dye their own items: Bring any white item to dye - it MUST be natural fiber: Cotton, linen, silk, bamboo, rayon, or tencel. Suggestions: A white t-shirt (often on sale at Jo-Ann's or Michaels), cloth napkins, other white clothing, or vintage items you no longer wear. Please pre-wash.

  • Beginners welcome - no experience required!
  • REQUIRED: $20 materials fee, paid to the instructor at class, for one scarf and bamboo socks. Additional pieces may require an additional charge.
  • PLEASE BRING: A mask (we are working with powder dyes), a plastic bag(s) to take wet pieces home, and rubber gloves. CTAC has non-latex disposable gloves to use.
  • ALSO RECOMMENDED: Please bring an apron or wear old clothes that you don’t mind getting stained - dyes are permanent! Also, as stated above, you are welcome to bring a white natural-fiber item to dye, in case time is left to dye more items.
  • Must be comfortable with bringing dyed fabrics home to do the final rinse/wash (laundry machine or clean laundry tub is ok).
  • There will be time for a 1/2 hour lunch break - please bring your own sack lunch. Limited refrigerator space is available.

Terry Tarnow has been a fiber artist for over 50 years. Over the years she has taught fiber related classes at Northwestern MI College, Crooked Tree Art Center, Dennos Museum Center, Michigan League of Handweavers and private classes in her home. She is currently co-president of the Northland Fiber Arts Guild and President of Michigan Legacy Art Park.  Terry works in all types of fiber techniques including weaving, silk painting, felting, quilting and knitting. She has most recently won awards for her fiber work from the Michigan League of Handweavers and the Dennos Museum Center.

 

Cancellation & Class Policies

Cancellation Policy for Traverse City Adult Workshops

Cancellation
Crooked Tree Arts Center reserves the right to cancel any multi-day, sequential-day workshop that does not meet its minimum student enrollment 14 days prior to the first workshop session. If a workshop is cancelled by CTAC for lack of enrollment, CTAC will offer a full refund to the student in the manner in which tuition was paid. (Cash payments will be refunded by check.)

Student Withdrawal
Requests for cancellation by the student at least sixty (60) days prior to the first day of the workshop will be honored (minus a $20 processing fee).  Requests for cancellation by the student between thirty (30) and fifty-nine (59) days prior to the first day of the workshop will receive a 50% tuition refund . NO REFUNDS will be given for a student cancellation made less than thirty (30) days prior to the first day of the workshop.
