Want to add more contrast and texture to watercolor paintings or perhaps illustrate a children's book? If so, this class is for you! Join artist, Janet Oliver, to learn basic tips and techniques for using an ink pen to add interest and an attention-grabbing flair to your artwork. Pen with watercolor lends itself well to illustrating for books, cards, journals, and more.

  • SUPPLIES REQUIRED - Please click on the Supply List link below this description for details.
  • Recommended: Some photo references of objects that work well with pen & watercolor will be provided. However, you may bring your own photo.
  • Some previous experience with drawing and painting helpful, but not required.

Janet (Jan) paints with acrylic, oil and watercolor. Jan loves nature and the beauty within, which is captured in most of her work. Her paintings lean towards realism, often enhanced to emphasize inspirational elements. She also paints portraits and does other commission work. 

Jan is the illustrator for the picture books: “Fire Bird: The Kirtland’s Warbler Story,” “Rosie’s Rescue: Rosie the Roseate Spoonbill,” and “The Lord Looks at Your Heart.”

Jan has been teaching part-time since the late 1990s, but her specialty is teaching watercolor painting. She has taught many classes at Northwestern Michigan College’s Extended Education Program, Mr. Pinn Gallery in Bellaire (now closed), and the Senior Center Network (at the Interlochen and Traverse City locations). 

Jan has received awards and recognitions for her book illustrations and has been a finalist in both an art show at the Grand Traverse Commons and wine label competition through Bowers Harbor Vineyards. She has shown her work throughout the region at various art shows (including juried exhibits) and fine art galleries. You can see her work now in the gift shops at Crooked Tree Art Center, Traverse City and Oliver Art Center, Frankfort.

 

 

 

Cancellation & Class Policies

Cancellation Policy for Traverse City Adult Workshops

Cancellation
Crooked Tree Arts Center reserves the right to cancel any multi-day, sequential-day workshop that does not meet its minimum student enrollment 14 days prior to the first workshop session. If a workshop is cancelled by CTAC for lack of enrollment, CTAC will offer a full refund to the student in the manner in which tuition was paid. (Cash payments will be refunded by check.)

Student Withdrawal
Requests for cancellation by the student at least sixty (60) days prior to the first day of the workshop will be honored (minus a $20 processing fee).  Requests for cancellation by the student between thirty (30) and fifty-nine (59) days prior to the first day of the workshop will receive a 50% tuition refund . NO REFUNDS will be given for a student cancellation made less than thirty (30) days prior to the first day of the workshop.
