Description

This workshop will focus on creating a portrait from a live model and learning techniques to help achieve a good likeness. We will break down the process into three stages:

  • Gesture or initial rough drawing
  • Capturing the shapes of the face
  • Refining the drawing

Instruction will include demonstrations that will help individuals understand various approaches that can be tailored to each artist's unique way of drawing. There will also be dedicated time for students to work on their own portraits from the model. Secondary topics such as good lighting techniques, exaggeration, and conveying a story about the subject will be touched on too.

Tuition includes the model fee.

Supplies: Students will provide their own materials. For the first class please bring a sketchbook 11x14 or larger, vine charcoal, kneaded eraser, and your preferred medium. Michael will make budget-friendly suggestions/recommendations for other materials related to individual preferred drawing mediums.

A true Northern Michigan native, Mike was born and raised in Traverse City. A love for drawing brought him to the Kansas City Art Institute where he received his BFA in Illustration. His career has involved work in many creative fields including graphic & web design, digital painting, illustration, and fine art. His work has been displayed in galleries, restaurants, and breweries throughout Northern MIchigan. Mike is married and has two amazingly creative kids.

There is a moment of pure elation, when someone has been toiling to learn something difficult, but finally starts to see success. This spark of joy is what pushes Mike toward teaching. He has a deep desire to help people achieve their dreams.

 

 

 

Cancellation & Class Policies

Cancellation Policy for Traverse City Classes (In-Person)

Student Withdrawal
Requests for cancellation by the student at least seven (7) days prior to the first day of class will be honored (minus a $20 processing fee).  NO REFUNDS will be given for a student cancellation made less than seven (7) days in advance of the first day of the class.

Class Cancellations (Weather)
In the event of inclement weather, CTAC-TC will announce the cancellation on its website and phone system (231-941-9488). We will do our best to provide a make-up opportunity for the missed class. Refunds will not be given if the student is unable to attend the rescheduled session of class. Please note that CTAC-TC does not follow Traverse City Area Public School closings.

Student Absence
We are unable to offer refunds or make-up sessions for classes missed due to student absence.

Minimum Enrollment
Crooked Tree Arts Center reserves the right to cancel any class that does not meet its minimum student enrollment prior to the first class session. If a class is cancelled by CTAC for lack of enrollment, CTAC will offer a full refund to the student in the manner in which tuition was paid. (Cash payments will be refunded by check.)
