Crooked Tree Arts Center - Traverse City announces its exhibition Interlacements: The Fine Craft of Weaving

Interlacements features nine Michigan artists including Boisali Biswas, Martha Brownscombe, Deb Cholewicki, Sharon Gill, Carol Irving, Jasmine Petrie, Carol Madison, Nancy McRay, and Shanna Robinson. Through the work of these nine artists, a range of fiber art practices will be explored. Natural fibers, synthetic materials, and found objects are manipulated through traditional fine craft and contemporary fiber techniques, honoring this ancient medium through contemporary voices and artistic expression.

“This is a rare opportunity to see a gallery full of woven artwork that celebrates the idea of over/under/over/under in both traditional and unusual materials. Weaving is approached differently by each of the 9 artists in the group, creating an exhibition that is diverse and enlightening. Interlacements shows that “woven” can be applied to two- and three-dimensional structures and can employ materials ranging from thread to newspaper to inner tubes. We hope to stretch the viewer’s notion of what art is and what art means,” said Interlacements artist Shanna Robinson.

“If you saw the first show at Charlevoix Circle of Arts, you can expect to see new work and new materials in the Interlacements exhibition at the Crooked Tree Arts Center - Traverse City. This iteration of the exhibition will be different than the first because each of the artists continues to explore new ideas in their weaving practice. We have also added a new artist, Sharon Gill to our group. She makes sensitive, poetic basket structures with natural materials.”

The exhibition will open on Friday, September 8 and will run through Saturday, October 28. An opening reception, along with CTAC - Traverse City's two other Fall exhibitions, will be held on Friday, September 15 from 5 - 7 pm. A corresponding Coffee @ 10 lecture will be held on Friday, September 22 from 10 - 11 am.

The Crooked Tree Arts Center - Traverse City is open Tuesday through Friday from 11 am - 5 pm and Saturday 10 am - 4 pm and is located at 322 Sixth Street in downtown Traverse City.
