    DESCRIPTION

Learn how to work with natural dye at home using kitchen waste or dyestuff foraged from the environment! Participants will learn about the mordanting process and how to get the best color from natural dyes. We will also utilize shibori techniques to create surface design before dyeing. Students will leave with a beautifully personal naturally dyed silk scarf, color swatches, and expanded knowledge of the craft.

Participants should dress for mess and bring their own rubber gloves, aprons, and a plastic bag to transport dyed items. Optional: sewing kit and scissors.

    LEARN MORE

Natural dyes are made from a variety of sources, including plants, animals, minerals and insects. Natural dyes can be used in combination with each other to create unique colors and effects. Natural dyes are considered more environmentally friendly than synthetic dyes, which are based on chemicals (such as aniline or coal tar). They can also be used to dye a variety of fabrics, including silk, wool and cotton.
