    DESCRIPTION

Dyers have been using indigo to create blue dye for centuries - we will be using a modern recipe for this 100% naturally derived fermentation indigo vat. We will formulate a vat together and utilize shibori techniques on fabric to create surface design before dyeing. Students will leave with a beautifully personal naturally dyed silk scarf and expanded knowledge of the craft.

Participants should dress for mess and bring their own rubber gloves, aprons, and a plastic bag to transport dyed items. Optional: sewing kit and scissors.

Shibori-style indigo dyeing is sometimes called Sudoku or Sudou, which means “blue earth” or “blue mud” in Japanese. It involves folding, twisting or bunching cloth and binding it before dyeing in indigo. Shibori-style textiles usually feature irregular patterns and contrasting colors that stand out against the indigo background. Bound areas resist the indigo dye, producing blue-and-white patterns when finished.
