    DESCRIPTION

In this workshop, we will explore the versatility of gouache, a water-based paint with a little bit of the best properties of watercolor, oil, and acrylic all in one medium. Traditionally developed as a commercial graphic medium, gouache is a richly-pigmented, water soluble opaque paint that is great in the studio and easy to use while traveling. We will explore the paint’s unique strengths, application, color mixing, and preparation for exhibiting finished works. The instructor, Justin Shull, will also bring completed examples of his work in gouache to discuss.

Gouache is one of the most versatile watercolor mediums available, as it can be used on paper or canvas. Gouache is a great medium for beginners because it’s easy to use and has a lovely opaque quality. It’s also a popular choice for artists who create artworks in other media such as oil, acrylic and pastel because it can be used as an underpainting to create rich layers of color. It can also be used on its own, without any other mediums or supports. The opaque quality of the paint allows you to layer on the color without losing detail or having your brushstrokes show through.
