Hello! I’m Mary Jill Lemieur, a visual artist residing in beautiful Northern Michigan.
I have been doodling, drawing, and painting since age two. As a child, I was influenced by the miniatures and animal illustrations of Beatrix Potter, the whimsical art of Paul Klee, Marc Chagall, and the wild sixties colors of Peter Max. After earning my BFA (graphic design and multi-disciplinary fine arts) at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, Michigan, I worked as a graphic designer for more than a decade before embracing fine art and illustration. I have also studied with artists Doug Melvin, Edee Joppich, Chuck Forman, Bob Fagen, Jan Glass, and Jane Cardinal.
Although my work has been exhibited in solo shows, group shows, and galleries, I've found my true niche in commissioned work. I've painted hundreds of highly realistic portraits of people, places, animals, and beloved pets. These commissions are my most challenging and important work: I create treasured art which has an emotional impact, as well as one of beauty.
My paintings are created with oil, watercolor, acrylic, and elaborate hand-painted digital media. My intention is that my work will give you the same sense of wonder and imagination I feel when I'm painting the natural beauty of Michigan landscapes, sunsets, and wildlife!
I've illustrated a children's book called "Pinky and the Green Bean Can Do Club," written by Gene B. Symmonds, and am working on another children's book which features pets and painting, which is right up my alley!
I enjoy being a visual artist-in-residence for MMA (Michigan Arts Access), where I work in schools, integrating visual arts into the core curricula for students with disabilities. This year, my classes were remote, so there were no snowy commutes! Our residencies explore the unlimited possibilities that art provides - with access to everyone. In my residencies, I encourage and guide students into ongoing arts practices.
I've been honored to be a Featured Painter for Corel Corporation in 2018 and 2019. This year, my painting "Duncan on the Beach" received second place in the photoart category of Corel Painter's 2021 worldwide digital painting competition!
