Crooked Tree Arts Center Facilitates First Call for Artists by City of Petoskey’s Public Art Commission
PETOSKEY, MI — Crooked Tree Arts Center (CTAC) is facilitating the first call for public art put out by the recently-formed City of Petoskey Public Art Commission. The beginning of a long-term push for public art Up North in the Little Traverse Bay region, this first call for Petoskey public art is for the pedestrian walkway tunnel that connects the Downtown Business District with Petoskey’s Bayfront Park along the Little Traverse Wheelway.
Founded in 2023, the Art Commission was formed by Petoskey Mayor John Murphy who has emphasized the need for Petoskey to develop a more robust public arts scene.
“The City of Petoskey Public Art Commission has a vision for complementing the astounding natural beauty of our town with public works that reflect and enhance the cultural engagement of our citizenry and visitors,” remarks Sheila Ruen, Visual Arts Director at Crooked Tree Arts Center.
“For a town our size, Petoskey has a remarkably strong cultural community, with many people involved in creating and appreciating all manner of creative work, including visual arts, music, dance, theater, and culinary arts,” Ruen continues. “Public art works will celebrate and connect our impressive cultural energy with the natural beauty of our environment, enhancing the City’s already amazing parks and public spaces.”
The public tunnel at the focus of this public art push features approximately 1955 square feet of surface area covering the walls and ceiling of the walkway. There is also a public piano in the tunnel that can be incorporated into the design concept if the artist so chooses.
Deadline to submit proposals is August 17, 2024, with a target completion date of October 7, 2024. Applicants must be based in Michigan and be 18 years or older to apply. Interested parties can find details provided on the Crooked Tree Arts Center website and submit their proposals through Call for Entry (CaFÉ).
