Parallel 45 Theatre and Crooked Tree Arts Center invite you to a series of free play readings featuring daring playwrights produced around the country and the world. Witness bold works written by notable playwrights and performed by some of our community's most talented actors and directors.
These one-night-only readings will reintroduce important, heavily-produced plays to our northern Michigan audience for a night of rediscovery and discussion. In holding a series of free readings for the greater theatre-loving public, we hope to include multiple voices in important, on-going conversations around race, religion, gender-identity and more.
Each reading concludes with a panel featuring artists and community members. Free admission. Complimentary wine.
Straight White Men by Young Jean Lee
Directed by Sarah Bielman
Featuring Phil Murphy, Ben Eaton, Melissa Kay May
“The signal surprise of STRAIGHT WHITE MEN, written by the ever-audacious Young Jean Lee, is that the play is not a full-frontal assault on the beings of the title…Ms. Lee’s fascinating play goes far beyond cheap satire, ultimately becoming a compassionate and stimulating exploration of one man’s existential crisis. Believe it or not, Ms. Lee wants us to sympathize with the inexpressible anguish of her protagonist, a middle-aged, upper-middle-class straight white man…[A] mournful and inquisitive play…” —The New York Times.
