Portrait workshops by renowned watercolor painter Paul Jackson are an educational and entertaining experience! Participants will learn to paint portraits without fear, as Paul demonstrates his layered approach to skin and facial features. He will present guidelines and rules of thumb that will make portrait painting less intimidating. This is a portrait workshop and not figure drawing, so students will focus on chest, shoulders up. Paul will discuss lighting a model, camera settings, and instruction on what makes a good portrait. He will demonstrate special lighting techniques and how to photograph a figure in the most flattering light.
Paul will help students reach the next level of artistic confidence and ability by guiding students through a painting. He will illustrate the principles of design, color, value, composition, and the mechanics of watercolor.
Paul will demonstrate the versatility of watercolor paint. Students will learn how to work in thin layers of washes to build up luminous colors. He will lead students with step-by-step demonstrations of the painting process. Emphasis will be on what makes a good painting, planning the entire picture area, the importance of thinking through the composition, good division of shapes, value planning, what to communicate about the subject, and how to correct mistakes.
Through informal lectures, discussions, demonstrations, and critiques, students will refine their personal painting style. Come prepared to be entertained, make new artist friends, and find logical and creative answers to common watercolor problems.
If watercolor is your passion, then this highly energized painting workshop is for you! Paul's stress-free, positive approach toward the act of painting will inspire students to loosen up and have fun again.
